Graf von Faber-Castell’s Pen of the Year 2023 fountain pen tells its ancient Egyptian story through hieroglyphs, stones, and sculptural details. Part of the annual series begun in 2003, this edition draws on a civilization with roughly 3,000 years of history. Names of twelve Egyptian deities and stylized lotus flowers decorate the black, DLC-coated metal barrel. Its color recalls the fertile silt deposited by the Nile, and the lotus symbolizes rebirth.
At the grip, 24k gold-plated rings and glossy blue-painted rings recall Tutankhamun’s mask. The cap takes its shape from Nefertiti’s headdress, with reconstructed lapis lazuli at the top bearing an engraved scarab that represents life and rebirth. An Eye of Horus, the ancient Egyptian symbol of protection, is engraved on a 24k gold-plated plate at the barrel end.
The fountain pen has a handmade 18k gold nib, a piston filling system for bottled ink, a screw-on cap, and a solid metal clip. A bottle of lapis lazuli ink in an edition-specific design accompanies it.
Made in Germany, it measures 136 mm capped and weighs 68 g with the cap. The edition comprises 375 individually numbered fountain pens. Its polished black wooden case contains a brochure and authenticity certificate, with an additional insert for six other writing instruments.
