Ball Roadmaster Ocean Explorer combines a luminous moon phase with tide indications, a blue dial, and a rotating bezel in a 41 mm steel case.
The Ocean Explorer connects the changing moon to the rhythm of the tides. Its external rotating bezel indicates high and low tides over a two-week period, while a module developed by Ball displays spring and neap tides beside the moon phase. Spring tides occur near the new and full moon, when the sun, Earth, and moon are approximately aligned. Neap tides occur around the quarter moons. The lunar and tidal displays follow these related cycles together.
Thirty-three sealed tritium gas tubes illuminate the hands, dial, and lunar display without needing an external light charge. On the bezel, Super-LumiNova markings store light from an outside source and release it as a glow, complementing the continuously illuminated tubes on the main display. The Ball RR1803-C automatic movement also drives the time and date.
Limited to 1,000 watches, this version has a stainless steel case measuring 41 mm across and 14.8 mm thick. An anti-reflective sapphire crystal covers the dial, with a screw-down crown, magnetic resistance to 4,800 A/m, and water resistance rated at 10 atm. A stainless steel bracelet closes with a folding clasp.

How do the moon phase and tide indications work together?
The external bezel indicates high and low tides over a two-week period. Ball’s movement module shows spring and neap tides beside the moon phase. Spring tides occur near new and full moons, when the sun, Earth, and moon are approximately aligned; neap tides occur around the quarter moons. The displays let you follow that relationship on the watch.
How are the lunar display and tide bezel illuminated?
The 33 tritium tubes illuminate the hands, dial, and moon-phase display continuously. The tide bezel uses Super-LumiNova, which needs exposure to light. Tritium inside each sealed glass tube activates a luminous coating continuously, without a battery or prior exposure to light. The glow gradually fades as the tritium decays, with a half-life of about 12.3 years.
What does magnetic resistance mean for the movement?
Magnetic fields can disturb a mechanical movement’s rate. The magnetic-resistance rating describes its protection against that effect. The watch is rated to 4,800 A/m; stronger magnetic fields can exceed that protection.
Why is it important to secure the crown after setting?
After setting or winding, return the crown to its closed position and screw it fully into the case before contact with water. Correct closure is needed to maintain the rated water resistance.
