Pilot Custom 845 Deep Blue builds the depth of its color through layers of hand-applied urushi lacquer, bringing a changing luster to its ebonite body.
Successive layers of urushi are applied by hand over several weeks, building depth and nuance in the blue surface as the light changes. Ebonite forms the body beneath the lacquer, and the polished roiro finish draws attention to the color itself, set against gold trim and a two-tone 18k gold nib.
Introduced in 2002, the Custom 845 continues Pilot’s Luccanite tradition of lacquering machined ebonite, patented in 1925. It follows the form of the Custom Urushi in a smaller format. The fountain pen has a screw-on cap and accepts Pilot ink cartridges or a compatible converter for bottled ink, with a converter included.
Made in Japan, it measures 146.3 mm capped, 132.6 mm uncapped, and 165.9 mm with the cap posted. The barrel is 13.2 mm wide, and the pen weighs 27 g capped and 16 g uncapped.
