Overview
Traditional vermilion urushi gives the Nakaya Cigar Long Shu fountain pen its color and cultural meaning, on a 17 mm-wide ebonite body.
Shu is a slightly yellowish vermilion with a long history in China and Japan. It appears in palaces, shrines, and temples, where its traditional associations include protection, eternal youth, and longevity.
The vermilion lacquer carries that tradition onto an ebonite body with a 17 mm barrel width. Made by hand in Japan, this version has a 14k gold nib.
The pen accepts ink cartridges or a converter for bottled ink and closes with a screw-on cap. It measures 166 mm capped, with a barrel length of 145 mm and a barrel width of 17 mm. It weighs 28 g with the cap and 22 g without the cap.
Tokyo-based Nakaya began specializing in custom urushi fountain pens in 1999, when Toshiya Nakata brought together craftsmen with more than 40 years of experience at Platinum Pen. The name recalls Nakaya Manufacturing Company, established in 1924 as Platinum's predecessor.
