Overview

Vostok Europe Atomic Age Fermi GMT follows two time zones across a layered blue dial, with upright tritium tubes and a polygonal steel case.

The Fermi line honors Enrico Fermi, who led the team behind the first nuclear reactor in 1942 and received the 1938 Nobel Prize in Physics. That reactor marks the beginning of the era recalled by Atomic Age, whose three lines are dedicated to Fermi, Sakharov, and Oppenheimer.

Two welded metal sections, secured by two rivets, form the polygonal case. Beneath the 3.7 mm curved, anti-reflective K1 crystal, the layered blue dial has a grain texture. The brushed, skeletonized hour and minute hands contain two tritium tubes, while twelve more stand upright in reflectors around the dial.

The Japanese TMI NH34 automatic movement drives the hour, minute, and seconds hands, the date, and a separate GMT hand. That fourth hand completes one circuit every 24 hours, allowing another time zone to be read independently of the main hands. A full wind provides approximately 41 hours of running time. Colored glass in the exhibition back carries the Atomic Age logo over the movement.

The 316L stainless steel case measures 48 mm across and 16.5 mm thick, with a screw-down crown and water resistance rated at 20 atm. Leather and ventilated silicone straps are included, both 25 mm at the lugs, with a replacement tool. A red VE DryBox XL holds the watch and accessories and can be converted to store four watches. Production is limited to 3,000 watches.

Questions & Answers

Who is this Atomic Age model named for?

This model is named for Enrico Fermi. Fermi led the team that built the first nuclear reactor and received the 1938 Nobel Prize in Physics. Atomic Age looks back to the era that began with the first reactor in 1942, with separate lines honoring Fermi, Sakharov, and Oppenheimer.

How do the tritium tubes work?

Tritium gas activates a luminous coating inside sealed glass tubes, so they glow continuously without a battery or prior light exposure. This watch has 12 on the dial and two in the hands. The Swiss Trigalight elements are made by mb-microtec, which has supplied Vostok Europe since 2009. The glow gradually fades as the tritium decays.

How do I read the second time zone?

Read the main hour and minute hands for one time zone, then read the separate GMT hand against the 24-hour scale for the other. The GMT hand makes one full turn per day and can be set separately from the main hour hand.

How does K1 crystal differ from sapphire?

K1 is reinforced mineral glass chosen for impact resistance. Sapphire is harder and more resistant to scratches, so the two materials have different strengths. The anti-reflective coating on this watch’s K1 crystal reduces glare.

Does the case diameter include the lugs?

The 48 mm diameter describes the width of the case. Its 58.3 mm lug-to-lug measurement runs in the other direction, from the tip of one lug to the tip of the opposite lug. That longer measurement describes how far the case extends along the wrist, which the diameter alone does not show.

What gives the case its angular shape?

The polygonal case is built from two welded metal sections secured by two rivets. Its grain-textured dial and brushed, openworked hands continue that industrial appearance, while colored glass in the back shows the automatic movement.
