Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon AeroGMT II brings three time zones to a 42 mm steel case, with a blue dial and an illuminated sapphire bezel.
Developed for commercial pilots, the AeroGMT II shows local time on the main hands and a second zone with a separate GMT hand. That hand reads a fixed 24-hour scale, making day and night clear in the second zone. Turning the bidirectional bezel brings another 24-hour scale into play for a third reading, so home, local, and destination time can be followed together.
Black and green divide the sapphire bezel’s illuminated 24-hour scale. Its micro gas tubes extend the dial’s lighting system to the travel scale. In all, 44 sealed tritium tubes illuminate the hands, hour markers, and bezel continuously, without a battery or prior exposure to light. An anti-reflective sapphire crystal covers the blue dial and date display.
The COSC-certified Ball RR1201-C automatic movement drives the time and GMT displays. It sits inside a stainless steel case measuring 42 mm across and 13.85 mm thick, with a patented crown protection system to help keep the crown securely closed. The watch combines shock resistance to 7,500 Gs with magnetic resistance to 4,800 A/m, and the case is water-resistant to 10 atm.
A stainless steel bracelet closes with a folding clasp.
The main hands show local time. The GMT hand reads a second zone against the fixed 24-hour scale. Turning the bidirectional 24-hour bezel creates another reference for that same GMT hand, giving a third time-zone reading.
The 44 tubes illuminate the hands, hour markers, and sapphire bezel scale, so the lighting covers the time-zone readings around the display. Tritium inside each sealed glass tube activates a luminous coating continuously, without a battery or prior exposure to light. The glow gradually fades as the tritium decays, with a half-life of about 12.3 years.
Magnetic fields can disturb a mechanical movement’s rate. The magnetic-resistance rating describes its protection against that effect. The watch is rated to 4,800 A/m; stronger magnetic fields can exceed that protection.
It passed independent chronometer testing over 15 days, in five positions and at three temperatures. The permitted average daily rate during the test is -4 to +6 seconds. This traditional test is performed before the movement is cased, so the watch’s rate in daily wear can vary.
The patented guard protects the crown against impacts and helps ensure that it is properly closed. Both the crown and guard must be secured before the watch is exposed to water.
