Vostok Europe Nuclear Submarine SSN 571 Automatic Watch with Green Dial.
The Nuclear Submarine line honours the USS Nautilus, SSN 571, the first operational nuclear-powered submarine and the first to cross the North Pole submerged, on 3 August 1958. The Nuclear Submarine SSN 571 lights its dial with 12 tritium tubes set vertically in reflectors and 3 more in the hands. The case measures 45.7 mm in stainless steel 316L, 15.6 mm deep.
The TMI NH35 automatic calibre, made in Japan, drives hours, minutes, seconds and date, with hacking seconds and manual winding, beneath a K1 crystal with anti-reflective coating. A full wind holds 41 hours. The crown and the solid case back screw down, and the case back carries an image in 3D.
The green dial sits in a case finished in black PVD and stonewash. Delivered with a leather strap and a silicone strap, 22 mm at the lugs, and a small coin is enough to change them.
The USS Nautilus, the first operational nuclear-powered submarine and the first to complete a submerged transit of the North Pole, on 3 August 1958. Nuclear propulsion let her stay at sea far longer than the diesel-electric submarines of her time. Vostok Europe has built its watches in Vilnius, Lithuania, since August 2003, on Russian movements until 2014 and Japanese movements since.
Each marker is a sealed glass tube in which tritium gas makes a luminescent coating glow, continuously and with nothing to charge. This model carries 12 on the dial and 3 in the hands. The tubes are Trigalight, made by MB-microtec in Switzerland, a supplier of Vostok Europe since 2009, and after about 10 years their brightness settles at around 50 per cent.
A synthetic crystal that combines the shock resistance of hardened mineral glass with a scratch resistance close to sapphire. On these cases it carries an anti-reflective coating for readability.
The distance between the lugs decides that, and here it is 56.2 mm. That span sits across the top of the wrist and matters more than the 45.7 mm of the case.
Time Module Inc. in Japan, the TMI of the reference. Vostok Europe used Russian movements until 2014 and Japanese suppliers since, so the case is assembled in Lithuania around a Japanese automatic calibre.
