The Ball Engineer III Marvelight Chronometer pairs a COSC-certified movement and mu-metal magnetic shielding with a red dial that stays readable all night.
Easy to read, day or night
The red dial shows the hours, minutes, and sweep seconds, with a magnifier that makes the date easier to read. Fourteen sealed tritium tubes keep the hands and hour markers illuminated continuously. Inside each glass tube, tritium activates a luminous coating, producing a glow without a battery or any charge from sunlight or a lamp.
A certified movement, shielded from magnetism
Magnetic resistance has been a Ball standard since 1891, when Webb C. Ball set requirements for railroad watches after a train collision at Kipton, Ohio. Inside the case, the COSC-certified Ball RR1103-C automatic movement powers the time and date. COSC, the official Swiss institute that certifies chronometers, tests each movement for 15 days.
A mu-metal shield redirects static and low-frequency magnetic fields around the movement. Made of nickel, iron, copper, and molybdenum, it provides resistance up to 80,000 A/m (1,000 gauss). That shielding is useful at a desk surrounded by laptops, phones, and speakers, all of which produce magnetic fields. The case is water-resistant to 100 meters.
The details
The case and matching bracelet are made from 904L stainless steel. The alloy’s chromium, molybdenum, nickel, and copper content gives it resistance to corrosion and acids. The case measures 40 mm across and 13.15 mm thick, with an anti-reflective sapphire crystal and a screw-down crown. The bracelet fastens with a folding clasp.

Does the gas-tube illumination need charging?
No. This watch uses 14 tritium gas tubes. Inside each sealed glass tube, tritium activates a luminous coating. The tubes glow continuously, without a battery or any need to be charged by sunlight or a lamp. The glow gradually fades as the tritium decays, with a half-life of about 12.3 years.
Why are 904L steel and mu-metal both used in this watch?
They serve different purposes. The 904L steel forms the case and bracelet; its chromium, molybdenum, nickel, and copper content gives it resistance to corrosion and acids. A mu-metal shield inside the case redirects static and low-frequency magnetic fields around the movement to help protect its rate. The watch is rated to 80,000 A/m (1,000 gauss). Stronger fields can exceed that protection.
What does COSC certification mean for this movement?
The movement passed independent chronometer testing over 15 days, in five positions and at three temperatures. The permitted average daily rate during testing is -4 to +6 seconds. The test is done before the movement is fitted into the case, so the watch’s daily rate on the wrist can vary.
Why is it important to secure the crown after setting?
After setting or winding, return the crown to its closed position and screw it fully into the case before contact with water. Correct closure is needed to maintain the rated water resistance.
