The Ball Engineer III Endurance 1917 GMT lets you jump the local hour hand to a new time zone without stopping the watch or losing home time.
Ball’s own in-house movement
Ball’s link to time zones dates to 1883. That year, American railroads adopted standard time, and Webb C. Ball became the first Cleveland jeweler to use official time signals.
Each of the 1,000 watches in this limited edition is fitted with the Ball Manufacture RRM7337-C caliber. This COSC-certified automatic movement uses oil formulated for temperatures down to -49°F (-45°C). COSC, the official Swiss chronometer testing institute, checks the accuracy of each certified movement over 15 days.
Local time in one-hour jumps
The caliber lets the local hour hand jump in one-hour steps while the GMT hand and the seconds keep moving. The date follows the local hour hand, so the calendar stays aligned with the time at your destination. The GMT hand reads against a 24-hour scale, so you can tell day from night in the second zone. After an overnight flight, you can switch to local time before you leave the plane.
Lit by 39 tritium tubes
Thirty-nine sealed tritium tubes keep the hands and blue dial illuminated, without needing to be charged by light. A magnifier enlarges the date.
Shielded from magnetism
Inside the 904L stainless steel case, a mu-metal shield redirects static and low-frequency magnetic fields around the movement. Made from nickel, iron, copper, and molybdenum, the shield helps keep those fields from disturbing the movement’s rate. Magnetic resistance is rated at 80,000 A/m (1,000 gauss). A protective Amortiser ring around the movement absorbs energy from lateral shocks.
The details
The case measures 41 mm across and 13.15 mm thick, with an anti-reflective sapphire crystal and a screw-down crown. The 904L alloy is valued for its high resistance to corrosion. The case is water-resistant to 100 meters. A 904L stainless steel bracelet closes with a folding clasp.
Use the crown to move the local 12-hour hand in one-hour steps. The GMT hand continues to show home time and the seconds keep running, so you can adjust local time without resetting either one. The date follows local time as the hour hand moves. This way of setting local time independently is often called a true GMT.
Read the GMT hand against the fixed 24-hour scale on the dial. It shows a second zone alongside local time, with a full day represented on the scale so morning and evening can be distinguished.
No. This watch uses 39 tritium gas tubes. Inside each sealed glass tube, tritium activates a luminous coating. The tubes glow continuously, without a battery or any need to be charged by sunlight or a lamp. The glow gradually fades as the tritium decays, with a half-life of about 12.3 years.
Amortiser surrounds the movement with a protective ring that absorbs energy from lateral shocks. A mu-metal shield redirects static and low-frequency magnetic fields around the movement to help keep those fields from disturbing its rate. The watch is rated to 80,000 A/m (1,000 gauss). Stronger fields can exceed that protection.
The movement passed independent chronometer testing over 15 days, in five positions and at three temperatures. The permitted average daily rate during testing is -4 to +6 seconds. The test is done before the movement is fitted into the case, so the watch’s daily rate on the wrist can vary.
