U-Boat Capsoil Darkmoon Curve Quartz Watch with Black Dial.
The Capsoil line floods the case with a lubricating oil and reads the Darkmoon dial through it, under a bubble that takes up the change in volume as the temperature moves. This one curves the dial itself under the dome, so the numerals bend away towards the rim. The case measures 40 mm in bronze IP.
The Ronda 712.3 quartz calibre drives it.
The brushing on the black dial runs outwards from the centre, so a band of light travels across it as the wrist turns. The bronze coating warms the case and the bezel together. The case is finished in bronze IP, which warms the tone of the whole piece. It is worn on black silicone.

What is the oil inside the case for?
It fills the space between the dial and the crystal. Light travels through the oil at close to the same speed as through the crystal, so the reflection drops away and the hands read as if they sat on the surface. An air bubble takes up the change in volume as the temperature moves.
How does the oil behave in the cold?
The house rates the fill for service between 0 and 60 degrees Celsius when the watch is off the wrist. Outside that band the oil changes viscosity and the compensation bubble grows, and the dial clouds until the watch comes back into range, at which point it reads clear again.
How is the battery changed on a watch full of oil?
Through a locking ring in the case back that a watchmaker opens and closes on the bench, with the oil topped up at the same time. The design exists so the service is done locally, and the watch stays out of the factory.
Where does the U-Boat design come from?
From a drawing Ilvo Fontana made in 1942 for the Italian naval military forces, a diving watch that stayed on paper. His grandson Italo Fontana revived it in Lucca and built the house around its proportions and around the crown set on the left side of the case.
How long does the Superluminova stay lit?
It is a phosphorescent pigment, so it charges from daylight or a lamp and gives its brightest reading in the first minutes. It fades over the hours after that and takes a fresh charge every time it meets light again.
