U-Boat cuts and finishes its straps in Tuscany by hand, on the lug widths its own cases carry, so the fit is the one the watch was drawn for. This one is cut from leather aged by a natural process and finished with waxed cotton at the edge.
It measures 20 mm between the lugs and keeps that width to the buckle.
The black leather is aged by a natural process before it is cut, so it arrives already darkened and keeps moving with wear. A steel plate is set into the leather at the case end. It is cut at 20 mm where it meets the case, and that measurement is the one that has to match.

Will this fit my watch?
Measure the gap between the lugs of your case. This one is cut for 20 mm, and the fit is a match of that measurement alone, so any U-Boat reference with the same lug spacing takes it.
How does aged leather wear in?
It arrives already darkened, because the ageing happens before the cut. From there it keeps moving, and the places your wrist bends take on a shine that the rest of the strap keeps for longer.
What is the waxed cotton for?
The edge and the stitching are finished with a waxed cotton thread, which resists sweat and abrasion better than an untreated one and holds the edge of the leather closed as the strap flexes.
Why are the ends curved?
A round case leaves a gap where a straight strap end meets it. The curve is cut to the radius of the case so the leather meets the metal along its whole edge, which is what makes the strap read as part of the watch.
Does changing the strap change the water resistance?
The seal lives in the case back, the crown and the crystal, so the rating travels with the watch and the strap is free to change. What matters at the lug is that the spring bar seats fully in both holes.
