Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon Submarine Warfare Chronograph Automatic Watch with Black Dial.
The Engineer Hydrocarbon line carries Ball's heaviest protection: crown guards, lubricants rated for extreme cold, and several models developed with military and professional diving units. The Submarine Warfare Chronograph combines a titanium case with the Amortiser system, which holds the rotor steady so that an impact stays out of the gear train. The case measures 42 mm in titanium.
The Ball RR1402 runs 48 hours. 19 sealed glass tubes of tritium gas light the hands and the indices, each one self-powered for 25 years. Around it, the patented Amortiser® system absorbs impact to 7,500 Gs and magnetic protection reaches 4,800 A/m.
The 19 tubes hold the same brightness year after year, on their own energy.

What happens to the gas tubes over the years?
The 19 tubes hold tritium gas, which emits its own light through radioactive decay, continuously and on its own energy. Tritium has a half-life of 12.3 years, so the glow fades slowly. Ball rates the tubes for at least 25 years of useful reading.
Is it affected by magnets?
The case holds magnetic protection to 4,800 A/m, which covers the everyday sources that shift the rate of a mechanical watch.
What does the Amortiser system do?
A ring around the movement damps the shock before it reaches the gear train, and a brake holds the rotor so that an impact stops it turning violently on its axis, which is how a shock usually damages an automatic movement.
Is 30 atm of any use if I never dive?
It changes the seals, the crown and the case back. A case rated to 30 atm keeps water out through years of showers, swimming and the pressure changes of a flight, long after the gaskets of a lighter case have hardened.
What is the crown guard for?
The crown is the opening in the case, and the point where water and dust reach the movement first. A guard takes the blow before the stem does, and keeps the crown from being knocked open against a door frame or a rock.
