Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon Original Automatic Watch with Black Dial.
The Engineer Hydrocarbon line carries Ball's heaviest protection: crown guards, lubricants rated for extreme cold, and several models developed with military and professional diving units. The Original keeps the mu-metal magnetic protection, the Amortiser rotor brake and the triple-folding clasp that made the line's reputation. The case measures 40 mm in stainless steel, 14.55 mm deep.
30 sealed glass tubes of tritium gas light the hands, the indices and the bezel, each one self-powered for 25 years. Around it, the case absorbs impact to 7,500 Gs and magnetic protection reaches 80,000 A/m — 1,000 Gauss.
With 30 tubes across the face, the whole display reads at once in the dark, at the brightness it held the year before.

What happens to the gas tubes over the years?
The 30 tubes hold tritium gas, which emits its own light through radioactive decay, continuously and on its own energy. Tritium has a half-life of 12.3 years, so the glow fades slowly. Ball rates the tubes for at least 25 years of useful reading.
What does COSC certification actually guarantee?
The movement was tested for 15 days by the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres in 5 positions and at 3 temperatures, and it has to hold an average daily rate between -4 and +6 seconds. The certificate covers the movement as tested, before it was cased.
What does 1,000 Gauss protect against in practice?
80,000 A/m is the equivalent of 1,000 Gauss, which covers the magnets you meet in a normal day — speaker surrounds, laptop and tablet closures, handbag clasps, induction hobs.
Does the crown screw down?
Yes. It threads into the case and compresses its gasket, which is what holds the water resistance. Unscrew it to set the time, and screw it back before the watch goes near water.
What does 7,500 Gs of shock resistance mean?
It is the impact the movement is built to take and keep its rate — the order of a watch knocked hard against a door frame, or dropped onto a wooden floor from waist height.
