Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon AeroGMT II Automatic Watch with Black Dial.
The Engineer Hydrocarbon line carries Ball's heaviest protection: crown guards, lubricants rated for extreme cold, and several models developed with military and professional diving units. The AeroGMT II is its aviation version, with a bidirectional bezel graduated over 24 hours that adds a third time zone to the local and GMT readings the hands already carry. The case measures 42 mm in stainless steel, 13.85 mm deep.
The Ball RR1201-C holds COSC chronometer certification. 44 sealed glass tubes of tritium gas light the hands, the indices and the bezel, each one self-powered for 25 years. Around it, the case absorbs impact to 7,500 Gs and magnetic protection reaches 4,800 A/m.
All 44 tubes light continuously, so the watch reads the same at 3 a.m. as at noon.

What happens to the gas tubes over the years?
The 44 tubes hold tritium gas, which emits its own light through radioactive decay, continuously and on its own energy. Tritium has a half-life of 12.3 years, so the glow fades slowly. Ball rates the tubes for at least 25 years of useful reading.
What does COSC certification actually guarantee?
The movement was tested for 15 days by the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres in 5 positions and at 3 temperatures, and it has to hold an average daily rate between -4 and +6 seconds. The certificate covers the movement as tested, before it was cased.
Is it affected by magnets?
The case holds magnetic protection to 4,800 A/m, which covers the everyday sources that shift the rate of a mechanical watch.
What is the difference between the GMT hand and the bezel?
The central hands show local time, the GMT hand reads a second zone against the 24-hour scale, and turning the bezel sets a third. Three zones read at once from one dial.
What is the crown guard for?
The crown is the opening in the case, and the point where water and dust reach the movement first. A guard takes the blow before the stem does, and keeps the crown from being knocked open against a door frame or a rock.
