Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon EOD Automatic Watch with Black Dial.
The Engineer Hydrocarbon line offers Ball's highest level of protection, with crown guards, lubricants rated for extreme cold, and several models developed with military and professional diving units. Licensed by the US Navy and named for its explosive ordnance disposal units, the EOD incorporates a patented SpringLOCK® cage that holds the balance through impact, with a SpringSEAL regulator beside it.
The titanium case, 42 mm in diameter and 13.7 mm thick, houses the COSC-certified Ball RR1101-CSL chronometer caliber. The hands, indices, and bezel are continuously lit by sealed glass tubes of tritium gas, each self-powered for 25 years. Magnetic protection reaches 80,000 A/m — 1,000 Gauss. The case is rated to 30 atm, beyond the depths reached by recreational divers.

How does the brightness of the gas tubes change over time?
The tubes contain tritium gas, which emits light continuously through radioactive decay using its own energy. Tritium has a half-life of 12.3 years, so the glow gradually fades. Ball rates the tubes for at least 25 years of useful legibility.
What does COSC certification guarantee?
The Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres tested the movement for 15 days in 5 positions and at 3 temperatures. Certification requires an average daily rate between -4 and +6 seconds. The certificate covers the movement as tested, before it was cased.
What does 1,000 Gauss protect against in practice?
80,000 A/m is equivalent to 1,000 Gauss, which covers the magnets encountered in everyday use — speaker surrounds, laptop and tablet closures, handbag clasps, induction cooktops.
What does the SpringLOCK system do?
A cage surrounds the balance spring and absorbs impact energy before it reaches the spring, the part of a mechanical watch whose rate is first affected by shock. A SpringSEAL regulator beside it holds the regulator arm in place.
What does 30 atm water resistance offer beyond diving?
The rating affects the seals, crown, and case back. A case rated to 30 atm keeps water out through years of showers, swimming and the pressure changes of a flight, long after the gaskets of a lighter case have hardened.
