Vostok Europe Atomic Age Fermi Automatic GMT Watch with Blue Dial.
The Atomic Age line dates the nuclear era from the first reactor of 1942 and splits into three branches, each dedicated to a physicist of the 20th century. The Fermi branch is dedicated to Enrico Fermi, creator of the first nuclear reactor and Nobel laureate in Physics in 1938. Its case, 316L stainless steel, measures 48 mm across and 16.5 mm thick.
Made in Japan, a TMI NH34 automatic GMT movement powers the hours, minutes, seconds and date beneath a curved K1 crystal with anti-reflective coating, and a full wind delivers a 41-hour power reserve. The crown screws down, and the case back closes under colored glass over the movement. Two metal parts welded together and fixed by two rivets make up the case.
The blue dial is built in layers with a grain texture, under brushed skeletonized hands, and vertical reflectors hold 12 tritium tubes, with two more in the hour and minute hands. The watch is fitted with a silicone strap with ventilation holes and a leather strap, measuring 25 mm at the lugs, together with a replacement tool.
The nuclear era that opened with the first reactor in 1942. The collection has three lines, dedicated to Enrico Fermi, Andrei Sakharov and Robert Oppenheimer. Vostok Europe has built its watches in Vilnius, Lithuania, since August 2003, on Russian movements until 2014 and on Japanese movements since.
Each marker is a sealed glass tube in which tritium gas makes a luminescent coating glow, continuously and with nothing to charge. The watch carries 12 on the dial and two in the hands. The tubes are Trigalight, made by MB-microtec in Switzerland, a supplier of Vostok Europe since 2009, and after about 10 years their brightness settles at around 50 percent.
A fourth hand turns once every 24 hours against a 24-hour track, independent of the hour hand, so home time reads off the same dial as local time.
A synthetic crystal that combines the shock resistance of hardened mineral crystal with a scratch resistance close to sapphire. On these cases it carries an anti-reflective coating for readability.
The distance between the lugs determines that, and here it measures 58.3 mm. That span sits across the top of the wrist and matters more than the 48 mm of the case.
