Alpina Alpiner Extreme Chronograph Automatic Watch with Grey Dial.
Alpiner is built on the brief of the Alpina 4 of 1938: antimagnetic, shock-resistant, water-resistant and cased in stainless steel, the 4 qualities the house set for a sports watch. The Extreme Chronograph is what the house calls an heir to its first sports watches, with 3 counters in a cushion case 42.5 mm long. The case measures 41 mm in stainless steel, 14.30 mm deep.
The AL-730 winds itself from the motion of the wrist and runs 62 hours. The chronograph counts up to 12 hours on a central hand tipped by a red triangle, the date sits between 4 and 5 o’clock, and a sapphire case back shows the movement.
The counters are set in contrast to the dial, so a timing reads at a glance. Black counters and a 60-second counter punctuate the grey dial.

What are the 4 qualities behind the Alpiner collection?
They come from the Alpina 4 of 1938. The house decided a true sports watch had to be antimagnetic, shock-resistant, water-resistant and cased in stainless steel, and the Alpiner collection keeps that brief. Gottlieb Hauser founded the house in 1883, and Alpina produces and assembles its movements and watches at its manufacture in Plan-les-Ouates, Geneva.
How do you read the chronograph counters?
The central seconds hand with the red triangle counts the seconds, the 30-minute counter adds up the minutes and the 12-hour counter the hours, so a single timing can run for half a day.
How long does it run off the wrist?
About 62 hours from a full wind. Daily wear keeps the mainspring topped up, and after longer in a drawer a few turns of the crown restart it.
Who makes the movement?
Alpina builds the AL-730 on a Swiss Sellita SW510 automatic base, and the house assembles its watches at its manufacture in Plan-les-Ouates, Geneva, as part of the Frederique Constant group.
How does the luminescent treatment work?
The pigment on the hands and markers stores light and gives it back in the dark. It is brightest just after exposure to daylight, fades gradually through the night and recharges the next time it sees light.
