The Pilot Custom 823 in amber has a translucent smoked-amber resin barrel and cap with gold trim. The transparent material is part of the design’s function: it reveals the ink held directly in the barrel and lets you check the remaining supply. Introduced in 2000, the Custom 823 brought a plunger-operated vacuum filling system to the Custom range.
The fountain pen’s built-in mechanism fills with bottled ink by creating a vacuum as the plunger returns, rather than using a cartridge or converter. A 14k gold nib and screw-on cap complete the writing instrument. It is presented in a Pilot gift box with silver satin lining, together with a 70 ml bottle of Pilot Blue fountain pen ink.
Made in Japan, it measures 149 mm capped, 131 mm uncapped, and 164 mm with the cap posted. The barrel is 12.5 mm wide, and the pen weighs 29 g capped and 19 g uncapped.

Can I check the ink level through the barrel?
Yes. The translucent smoked amber body lets you see the ink held inside the barrel, where the vacuum filling system stores it.
Should the rear knob be open while I write?
For continuous writing, hold the nib upward and loosen the rear end cap until there is a gap of about 2 mm between it and the metal ring. After writing, hold the nib upward and gently screw the end cap fully closed.
Does the Custom 823 use cartridges or a converter?
Neither. The Custom 823 has a built-in vacuum plunger that fills the barrel with bottled fountain pen ink. The plunger’s return stroke creates the vacuum used for filling.
What is included with this fountain pen?
The fountain pen comes in a Pilot gift box with silver satin lining and includes a 70 ml bottle of Pilot Blue fountain pen ink.
How should I clean the pen before changing ink colors?
Fill and empty the pen with clean water several times before adding a different ink color. For the exterior, use a soft, slightly damp cloth and avoid solvents and abrasive cleaners.
