Overview
The Namiki Capless Raden Stripes fountain pen uses stacked rectangles of mother-of-pearl to suggest the way still water mirrors the scene above it. The repeated inlays create a reflection running through the black lacquered surface, while their iridescence changes the colors as the pen turns. Rhodium trim accompanies the shell decoration.
Raden begins with thin layers taken from the inner surfaces of shells, including turban, trumpet, and ear-shaped shells. These layers are cut into small pieces, secured in urushi lacquer, and polished into the surface. The sequence of cutting, setting, and polishing creates the geometric pattern without losing the shell's changing reflections.
The Capless mechanism extends and retracts a rhodium-plated 18k gold nib, so there is no separate cap. The pen accepts ink cartridges or a converter for bottled ink. Made in Japan, it has a barrel width of 13 mm and a total weight of 30 g, and is supplied with a converter in a wooden box.

Why does the Raden Stripes pattern change color as the pen turns?
The decoration uses pieces of shell with an iridescent inner surface. Their appearance changes as the pen rotates, while the stacked rectangles create a mirror-like arrangement inspired by reflections on calm water.
How are the shell pieces set into the pen?

Does the Capless have a separate cap?
No. The writing point retracts into the pen, so there is no separate cap to remove or keep aside.
