Overview

The Graf von Faber-Castell Pen of the Year 2009 brings a historic textile craft to writing, with a horsehair barrel hand-woven by Dorit Berger.

Horsehair was used for chair coverings by the late eighteenth century. For this annual edition, weaver Dorit Berger brings the same textile tradition to a fountain pen, building the barrel’s pattern from individual fibers.

Tail hairs are selected for color and uniform thickness, then woven by hand, with roughly 70 hairs used per centimeter of fabric. Light and dark strands create the pattern across the barrel, framed by platinum-plated metal parts.

Made in Germany, the fountain pen has a hand-finished 18k two-tone gold nib, a piston filling system for bottled ink, a screw-on cap, and a solid metal clip. The individual number is on the head of the filling mechanism.

The wooden presentation box includes a brochure and an edition certificate. Dorit Berger’s signed certificate confirms the edition and the quality and authenticity of the horsehair.
