Vostok Europe Expedition South Pole Automatic Watch with Black Dial.
Limited to 3,000 pieces worldwide. The Expedition South Pole line is built around autonomy, on movements that run for months at a time so that a long expedition asks for light or for motion and little else. This one shows its mechanism through a semi-transparent dial, so the train and the rotor read from the front. The case measures 43 mm in stainless steel 316L, 15.4 mm deep.
The S.Epson YN55 winds itself from the motion of the wrist and runs 40 hours.
The black dial is left semi-transparent, so the train and the mechanism read through it from the front of the watch. The case is finished in black PVD. It is worn on leather, and a second strap comes in the box.

What is the idea behind the South Pole line?
Autonomy. The movement runs for months on light or on the motion of the wrist, so a long trip goes by with nothing to charge at a mains socket, and the bezel carries compass markings for taking a bearing off the sun. The house has worked out of Vilnius since August 2003—its movements came from Russia until 2014 and have been Japanese since.
How do you take a bearing with the bezel?
You point the hour hand at the sun and read the midpoint between the hand and the 12 marker, which gives you south in the northern hemisphere. The compass markings on the ring let you hold that line while you walk.
What is K1 crystal?
A hardened mineral glass whose surface is chemically strengthened, which lifts its scratch resistance well above ordinary mineral glass while keeping the give that stops it shattering on a knock. On these cases it is domed and coated to cut reflections.
Does it wear as big as the diameter suggests?
What decides that is the distance between the lugs, and here it is 52.6 mm. That is the span the case takes across the top of the wrist, and it matters more than the 43 mm of the bezel, which overhangs on either side of it.
Who makes the movement?
Seiko Epson in Japan. Vostok Europe fitted Russian movements until 2014 and has used Japanese suppliers since, which is why the case and the assembly are Lithuanian and the automatic calibre inside is Japanese.
