Vostok Europe Expedition North Pole Polar Ice Solar Quartz Watch with Blue Dial.
The Expedition North Pole line is built for stretches spent far from a power supply, in colours that stand against Arctic white and on cases sized to take an impact. This one holds the reading to hours, minutes, seconds, the date and a 24-hour scale, with the charge left shown on a register of its own. The case measures 47 mm in stainless steel 316L, 16.7 mm deep.
The S.Epson VS57 quartz calibre drives it. A full charge lasts about 5 months, and up to 4 of them in complete darkness, so the watch runs through a polar winter on the light it took in over the summer.
The dial is cut away in layers so that daylight reaches the cell beneath it, which is what keeps the movement charged from ordinary room light. The case is finished in blue PVD. It is worn on leather, and a second strap comes in the box.
Long stretches away from a power supply. The colours stand out against Arctic white, the case is sized to take an impact, and the movement holds its charge for months, so the watch keeps running where changing a cell is out of reach. The house has worked out of Vilnius since August 2003—its movements came from Russia until 2014 and have been Japanese since.
About 5 months from a full charge, and up to 4 months in complete darkness. The cell takes light from the sun or from an ordinary lamp, so wearing it through a normal day keeps it topped up.
A hardened mineral glass whose surface is chemically strengthened, which lifts its scratch resistance well above ordinary mineral glass while keeping the give that stops it shattering on a knock. On these cases it is domed and coated to cut reflections.
What decides that is the distance between the lugs, and here it is 58.2 mm. That is the span the case takes across the top of the wrist, and it matters more than the 47 mm of the bezel, which overhangs on either side of it.
Seiko Epson in Japan. Vostok Europe fitted Russian movements until 2014 and has used Japanese suppliers since, which is why the case and the assembly are Lithuanian and the quartz calibre inside is Japanese.
