Learn how to interpret your watch's water resistance, discover what protects its inner workings, and avoid the most common mistakes before taking it near the water.
Many watches feature markings such as 5 ATM, 100 m, or 30 bar on their dial or case back. At first glance, it seems simple: the higher the number, the deeper the watch can go. However, this interpretation can lead to an important mistake. A watch marked as water resistant to 50 meters is not necessarily designed to accompany you to that depth. To understand why, we first need to discover how a case, despite having several small openings, manages to keep water away from its movement.

Water resistance, also referred to as watertightness, is the ability of a watch to prevent water, moisture, and dust from entering its interior. It does not mean that the watch will remain completely waterproof forever, but rather that it has been designed and tested to withstand a specific level of pressure under certain conditions.
This resistance is usually expressed in atmospheres —ATM—, bars, or meters. As a general reference, 1 ATM is approximately equivalent to 1 bar or the static pressure found at a depth of 10 meters. However, the stated depth should not be interpreted literally as a safe operating depth. Arm movements, impacts against the water, and changes in temperature can place additional pressure on the watch case.

Although a watch case may appear to be completely sealed, it has several vulnerable points. Water can enter through the area where the crystal meets the case, the crown, chronograph pushers, or the case back. This is why water resistance does not depend on a single material, but on a complete system in which every component must work together.

Gaskets are small, flexible rings positioned around the crystal, crown, pushers, and case back. They are usually made from rubber or synthetic materials that can compress to seal the small gaps through which water could otherwise enter. They may be discreet, but they form one of the watch's most important lines of defense.

A screw-down crown is secured to the case using a threaded system, compressing its gasket and creating a more secure seal. The same principle can also be applied to the case back. This type of construction is common in sports and diving watches because it provides greater protection against pressure. Even so, the crown must always be fully screwed down before the watch comes into contact with water.

The crystal must be able to withstand pressure without deforming or separating from the case. Sapphire crystal is widely used in watchmaking because of its hardness and scratch resistance, although water resistance depends primarily on how the crystal is fitted and sealed. Materials such as stainless steel and titanium, meanwhile, provide strength and good resistance to corrosion, which is particularly important when a watch is exposed to salt water.

These recommendations are intended as a general guide. Before using any watch in the water, you should always check the manufacturer's specific instructions, particularly if you plan to go diving. Watches designed as divers must meet additional requirements regarding legibility, resistance, dive-time monitoring, and safety.

Water resistance is not limited to diving watches. It can also be found in urban models, sports watches, and professional timepieces, although each is designed with a different level of water exposure in mind.
At the 5 ATM level, we find collections such as Q Timex, Marlin, and Waterbury. Models such as the Timex Q Continental are designed to handle everyday situations such as rain, splashes, or washing your hands. They are versatile watches, but they are not designed for prolonged exposure to water.

At the 20 ATM level, the Victorinox I.N.O.X. collection stands out for its robust construction and resistance to impacts. This level of water resistance makes these watches suitable for swimming and more demanding water activities, provided the brand's specific guidelines are followed. The collection includes automatic, quartz, and chronograph versions made from steel, titanium, or carbon composite.
Once we reach 30 ATM, we enter the territory of watches created with a clear focus on diving. The U-Boat Classico Sommerso combines this level of resistance with a 46 mm case, sapphire crystal, and rotating bezel, all elements that reinforce its character as a diving watch.
We also find 30 ATM water resistance across several Vostok Europe collections, including the Lunokhod-2, Energia II, Batiscafos, and Nuclear Submarine. Their oversized cases, reinforced crystals, tritium tube illumination, and, on certain models, helium release valves reflect a construction designed to withstand particularly demanding conditions.
Beyond these ratings, we find the professional watches of Sinn. The Sinn U1 offers water resistance to 100 ATM, while the Sinn UX SDR pushes engineering even further with pressure resistance of up to 500 ATM. These are extreme examples of just how far watchmaking technology can go when the case, crystal, gaskets, and sealing system are designed to work together as a single protective barrier.
These examples also show that a higher rating does not automatically make a watch the best choice for everyone. The right level of water resistance is the one that suits how you actually plan to use your watch: from a Timex for everyday life to a Vostok Europe, U-Boat, or Sinn designed to handle far more demanding environments.

Gaskets age, lose their elasticity, and can deteriorate due to heat, chemicals, or sudden changes in temperature. An impact can also affect the fit of the crystal or crown. For this reason, it is advisable to have your watch's water resistance checked periodically, particularly before summer or before using it for swimming or diving.
You should also avoid operating the crown or pushers underwater unless the manufacturer specifically states that they can be used in these conditions. After swimming in the sea, rinse the watch with fresh water —provided its water-resistance rating allows it— to remove salt, and avoid exposing it to very hot showers, saunas, or sudden temperature changes.

Not everyone needs a watch rated to 300 meters. For everyday use, 5 ATM may be enough, while someone who swims regularly may feel more comfortable with 10 ATM. Anyone taking part in more demanding water activities should look for models rated to 20 or 30 ATM and make sure their construction has genuinely been designed for that purpose.
Water resistance is more than just a number engraved on a watch case. It is the result of gaskets, seals, materials, testing, and countless small engineering details that protect the heart of the watch. Understanding it will help you choose more wisely, care for your timepiece properly, and enjoy it for many years to come, both in and out of the water.
