how do i know when my fountain pen needs to be cleaned?

As time passes by, dust and dry ink rests can gather in the feeder of your fountain pen. This may alter the correct functioning of your fountain pen and modify the stroke. Also, the lack of cleaning may cause damages in the flow of ink.

In general terms, we know that it is time to clean our fountain pen when we appreciate any sign of deterioration in the writing quality. A deficient ink flow or some skipping, are examples of that.

As a reference, in order to ensure that your fountain pen works at its best as well as the long-life of it, we recommend to clean it every 4-8 weeks. This is specially needed when different or pigmented inks are used.

  • Container filled with room temperature water, like a glass.
  • Platinum Fountain Pen Cleaning Kit. Available for japanese and european fountain pens.

At Iguana Sell we always recommend to know the materials of which your fountain pen is made in otder to ensure that we clean it without damaging it. As an example, warm water musn't be used to clean a ruthenium coated fountain pen (nor for any other fountain pen, in most cases).

Dissolve the cleansing solution in the room ambient water.

If your fountain pen incorporates converter, you will need to pull it out. If your fountain pen is piston filling, you will need to unscrew it to procceed to the cleaning.

Use the Platinum Fountain Pen Cleaning Rubber bulb for the water to pass through the nib.

Immerse the pieces into water for at least two hours to ensure that no rest of dust or ink remains inside.

Dry all fountain pen pieces. It is important to do it carefully and trying to get rid of any humidity without using hot air, as it may damage your fountain pen.
