Today we are going to show you how to clean a fountain pen.
It is important to know the importance of taking care of our fountain pens. They are in constant contact with ink so if we don't clean them regularly the ink can dry causing an inconsistent flow of ink when we are writing. Furthermore, if we have a big collection of fountain pens it is important to store them after cleaning them so that we can find them in perfect conditions when we are ready to use them again.
On another hand, time needed to make the fountain pen completely clean will depend on several factors: How much we have used it, the level of retained ink... So cleaning a fountain pen can take from hours to days.
Below you will find the main tips to clean your fountain pens depending of their filling system.
Cleaning a cartridge fountain pen is really easy. Once we have finished the cartridge or want to use a new wan we must dissemble the fountain pen.
We will now fill our glass with room-temperature water and introduce the upper part (nib and grip section) of our fountain pen. As we have mentioned in order to get a perfectly clean fountain pen this process can take from a couple of hours to days. If your water becomes saturated with ink, feel free to replace it.
To clean the body, we can slightly place it under running water and then use a cotton swab to make its interior completely clean.
Once we have finished, we have to dry it all up with absorbent paper.
To get the perfect finish we may smooth the surface with our microfiber cloth.
The fountain pen featured in the images below is our Pelikan Epoch P360.
In this case, the first step has to be to make sure there is no ink remaining in our fountain pen. If there was to be any ink remaining, we must empty our piston filler.
Once we have an empty fountain pen, we will introduce it in a glass of water, fill and empty it several times until there is no ink remaining.
Then we must get a new glass of clean water, and place our fountain pen inside with an open piston.
Once it is clean, we only have to pull the fountain pen out of the water and dry it with absorbent paper.
The perfect finish is achieved going over the fountain pen with our microfiber cloth.
For this example we have used the succesful Pelikan M205 Aquamarine.
This is a mix between the two cleaning methods we have already mentioned.
First we will dissemble our fountain pen and place the grip section and nib in a glass of water.
When we have an empty converter, we will again fill and empty it with water several times until its completely clean.
Then we will place it in a glass with clean water and wait the time we consider necessary for both elements to be completely clean.
We will reassemble the fountain pen, dry it with absorbent paper and give it its shimmer back with our microfiber cloth.
